An imperfect song of unconditional love

I wrote this song when my son was almost four years old and his brother was still in the oven. I gingerly approached the delightful John Simon to compose music for it (he said yes! I thanked my lucky stars), and we will be serving this almost finished product as a birthday treat to big boy tomorrow morning, as he turns SEVEN!
Some men (am I being sexist? Is it just my guy?) don’t seem to get it, but the fact that kids actually grow up is bitter-sweet for me.

This was recorded this morning, in John’s kitchen.  It was so much fun to work on this together. We will someday have a professionally recorded version, but for now, here is the squeaky, far-far-from-perfect, oh-so-sweet first draft:

In a world driven by achievement and pressure to conform, I felt compelled to let my beloved boy know he is absolutely, positively, unbelievably, always loved; no matter what. If you can relate, would you please post a comment here?  And please share this with at least one child and one grown up, and as always, tweets and facebook “like”s are much appreciated, because that’s how we spread our joyful world-liberating message. Thank you!

John will be performing this song at an upcoming birthday party, and I’ll have another video for us then. Hopefully by then this stoooopid lingering cold that makes my voice sound froggy will have cleared by then, so when I can’t help but sing while filming, your ears will have a better time.

OK, time to check on those home-made, gluten-free,  Hershey-Kiss-on-top cupcakes. Who said school birthday cupcakes need to be home-made? I hate baking. OK i’m grumpy, clearly a sign that going to bed is in order. Good night world.

PS: My dad wanted the lyrics. I thought you might like to see them too:

It’s hard to be your age
So much you just can’t do
So much you just can’t reach
So much that’s not allowed
It’s my job to guide you, and try not get in the way
I hope you will remember these words I have to say

I love you in the night-time and in the light of day
I love you when you hold me close and when you run way
I love you when the sun shines, I love you when it snows
I love you, and I hope that you will always know

I love you when you’re quiet and I love you when you’re loud,
I love you even when you do the things you’re not allowed
I loved you when you couldn’t help and did the things you shouldn’t
and every single time you tried your best and couldn’t…

There’s absolutely nothing you could do or say
that would ever take my love away
Even when I don’t like what you do
I still, I always, love you

In a good mood you’re the best kid that I have ever met,
but even when you’re nasty, naughty, dirty, or upset,
I love you when you’re cranky, when you’re tired and when you’re sad,
I just want to reach out to hold your hand

I love to be together and when we are apart
even when I’m working, you’re always in my heart
I love to play with you, but I can understand
when you would rather hang out with your friends

There’s absolutely nothing you could do or say
that would ever take my love away
Even when I don’t like what you do
I still, I always, love you

I watch you make good choices and I watch you make mistakes
When you’re being careless, I tend to get upset
And if sometimes it’s hard for you to tell
remember that I love you even when I yell

I love you when I need to cook and you just want to play
I love you when I’m busy with a deadline the next day
I love you when I’m angry, when I’m sick and when I’m sad
you make it better every time you hold my hand

There’s absolutely nothing you could do or say
that would ever take my love away
Even when I don’t like what you do
I still, I always, love you

What a sweet gift for your soon-to-be seven year old! I do have to disagree that men don’t seem to get it, my fiance has been just as sad about our 10-month-old growing up as I am. But perhaps he’s the exception to the rule?
